** Fossil Ivory Zuni Maiden by Colvin Peina **
Beautifully inlaid with gem Coral, Turquoise and Jet.
A masterpiece
Colvin Peina died early in 2008. Colvin was noted for his bear, corn maiden and badger fetishes. Colvin Peina is represented in many fine Zuni Collections including The Heard Museum and The Museum of Northern Arizona.
Colvin's work is beautiful and technically perfect... among the best.
Colvin's art on par with that of Faye and Sandra Quandelacy. Colvin would often carve in Fossil Ivory and Antler where as I don't recall Faye or Sandra ever doing that.
For that matter, carving ivory is rarely done at all.
It was Faye who created this style Maiden and shared it with family and friends. Of course, each artist puts his / her style into the design.
Colvin influence can often seen in the many Peina / Sice family carvings.
This Maiden is 2 3/4" tall, balanced and very well proportioned.
It easily stands.
